LED solutions for shop windows, glass façades and events

Transparent LED screens: types, adhesive LED film for glass and how to choose

Transparent LED screens turn a shop window, a glass façade or a partition into a video surface without hiding what is behind it.

For years the only option was rigid modules in an aluminium frame. There are now several more, and the newest is adhesive LED film, a flexible sheet that is applied to the glass much like a vinyl.

They are not interchangeable: transparency, brightness, resolution and, above all, the way they are installed all differ.

This guide explains which types exist, how they differ and when each one makes sense.

What is a transparent LED screen?

A transparent LED screen is a display in which the LEDs are mounted on a support that lets light through: thin bars, a mesh or a clear film.

Because the LEDs and their electronics take up only a small part of the surface, the rest stays open. The result is a screen you can see through, with transparency ranging from roughly 50% to over 90% depending on the technology.

Switched off, it is barely noticeable. Switched on, the content shows on the glass, but the interior stays in view and daylight still comes in.

A conventional LED screen or a printed vinyl, by comparison, covers the glass completely.

The store remains visible from the street and daylight still comes in, even with the screen on.

Types of transparent LED screen

Very different products are sold under the name “transparent screen”. These are the five most widely used.

01Framed modules

Rigid-module transparent LED screen

This is the classic format and the most common one. The LEDs sit on thin horizontal bars inside an aluminium frame, forming modules that are joined together to reach the required size.

It is placed behind the glass, either standing on the floor or hung from a structure, with nothing fixed to the glass itself.

Typical characteristics:

  • Transparency of 50% to 85% on most models.
  • Very high brightness, suitable for shop windows in sunlight.
  • Pixel pitch usually between P2.6 and P10.
  • Robust structure that is easy to build, strike and maintain.
  • Available in versions designed for rental and events.

Its weak point is that the bars and the frame are visible up close. The result is less discreet than with a film.

When is it the best option?

In large shop windows and façades where a lot of brightness is needed.

At events, trade shows and on stages, where the screen has to go up and come down quickly.

And in any project where nothing can, or should, be stuck to the glass.

02The newcomer

Adhesive transparent LED film: the screen that sticks to glass like a vinyl

Transparent LED film is a flexible sheet only a few millimetres thick, with very small LEDs and a practically invisible circuit built into it.

The film is self-adhesive: it is applied directly to the inner face of the glass, much like a vinyl, with no metal structure and no building work.

What makes it different:

  • Very high transparency, typically between 70% and over 90%.
  • A few millimetres thick and only a few kilos per square metre.
  • No visible frames or structure.
  • Flexible: it can follow curved glass.
  • Some models can be trimmed to fit the size of the pane.
  • Switched off, it is almost imperceptible from a few metres away.

Because it needs no structure, it suits shop windows that are already fitted out, glass balustrades, partitions, panoramic lifts and curtain walls, where a conventional screen would be hard to install or simply would not fit.

It has two trade-offs. The higher the resolution (smaller pixel pitch), the lower the transparency. And it is meant for fixed or long-term installations: it is not something you stick on and peel off for a two-day event.

How is LED film installed on glass?

1. The glass is measured and the size and pixel pitch of the film are defined.

2. The glass is cleaned and the film is applied to the inner face.

3. Power and the controller are connected and hidden around the perimeter.

4. The content is set up and can be managed remotely like any digital signage system.

03Hologram effect

Holographic LED screen or “invisible screen”

This is an evolution of LED film. The LEDs are mounted on an ultra-thin mesh or film with transparency that can exceed 90%, so the support practically disappears from view.

When the content is designed on a black background, the image appears to float in mid-air, hence the commercial name “holographic”.

It can be stuck to glass or hung like a light curtain, so it is also used in showrooms, product launches, museums and set design.

It is not a real hologram

It is still an LED screen, but so thin and transparent that the audience only sees the image: a rotating product, a logo or a character.

04Large format

LED mesh or curtain for façades and stages

LED mesh is made of LED strips or bars spaced apart, with a wide pixel pitch, designed to cover very large surfaces that are viewed from a distance.

It is light, lets air and light through, and outdoor-rated versions are available.

It is mainly used on:

  • Building façades (media façades).
  • Concert and festival stages.
  • Large events and studios.
  • Stadiums and sports venues.
Made to be seen from afar

It covers many square metres with little weight and low wind load. Up close, the image loses definition.

05Maximum definition

Transparent OLED

It is not a modular LED screen, but it is often compared with them. Transparent OLED offers monitor-level resolution (Full HD or 4K) and excellent image quality at very close range.

In return, its transparency is lower (around 40%), its brightness is limited and it only comes in fixed sizes, such as 55 or 77 inches.

It works well in product display cases, museums, luxury retail and other interiors with controlled lighting. It is not suitable for shop windows in direct sunlight or for large surfaces.

Physical product + digital information

Placed in front of a product, it can overlay data, animations or prices on the real object.

How to choose a transparent LED screen

It helps to be clear on these six points before asking for a quote.

Transparency versus resolution

The smaller the pixel pitch, the more LEDs per square metre and the less transparent the screen. You have to decide what matters more: definition or seeing through it.

Viewing distance

A street-level shop window needs a finer pitch than a façade seen from across a square.

Ambient light

Glass in direct sunlight calls for several thousand nits of brightness. Indoors, with controlled lighting, far less is enough.

Type of glass

Flat or curved, a single pane or divided into sections, able to take hanging weight or not: the surface narrows down the technology.

Fixed or temporary installation

Adhesive film is ideal for permanent installations. For an event lasting a few days, rental modules are usually more practical.

Content

Small text and detailed video need more resolution. Logos, animations and large graphics work well with wider pitches.

Not sure whether you need adhesive film, modules or a holographic screen?

You do not need to decide before getting in touch. Tell us the size of the glass, the approximate viewing distance and whether it is a fixed installation or an event, and we can recommend the right solution.

Content: on a transparent screen, black is transparent

On a transparent LED screen, the black areas of the content are LEDs that are switched off, and you can see what is behind an LED that is off.

That is why purpose-made content works best: bright, high-contrast elements on a black background, which appear to float on the glass.

Ordinary full-screen video can also be played, but it covers most of the glass and the effect is lost. If the budget allows, it is worth adapting the content.

Black = glass

Design with what is behind in mind

The product, the store interior or the stage are part of the final picture.

Where are transparent LED screens used?

They are mostly installed in shop windows and glass façades, but also on exhibition stands, office partitions and stage backdrops.

In spaces with no glass available, a vertical LED totem is an alternative that needs no installation.

Transparent LED screens for events: rental and installation

At events, trade shows and on stages, a transparent screen lets you place images in front of a speaker, a product or a set without hiding them.

For builds lasting a few days, the usual approach is to rent rigid modules, which go up and come down quickly. For shop windows, buildings and retail premises, a fixed installation makes more sense.

At Creative Technology Spain we can study the project and recommend the most suitable solution based on the space, the ambient light, the viewing distance and the content.

Frequently asked questions about transparent LED screens

What is adhesive transparent LED film?

It is a very thin, flexible sheet with built-in LEDs that sticks directly to glass, much like a vinyl. It turns a shop window or a partition into a screen with no metal structure while keeping very high transparency.

Is a transparent LED screen visible in sunlight?

Yes, provided you choose a model with enough brightness. Transparent LED screens designed for shop windows deliver several thousand nits, enough for the content to be visible from the street in daytime. Transparent OLED, on the other hand, is intended for indoor use.

Can you see through the screen from the inside?

Yes. The LEDs emit outwards, so from inside you can still see the street and daylight still comes in. The more transparent the screen, the less noticeable it is from the inside.

What is the difference between adhesive LED film and a conventional transparent LED screen?

A conventional screen uses rigid framed modules that stand or hang behind the glass; it is very bright and easy to build and strike. LED film is a frameless sheet stuck to the glass; it is lighter, more transparent and more discreet, and is mainly intended for fixed installations.

What content works best on a transparent screen?

Content designed on a black background, with bright, high-contrast elements. Black areas appear transparent, so the image seems to float on the glass.

Can a transparent LED screen be rented for an event?

Yes. For trade shows, conferences, stages and presentations there are modular transparent LED screens designed specifically for rental, which are quick to build and strike and give you the technology just for the days of the event.

Need a transparent LED screen for your next project?

If you have a pane of glass and want to show content on it without covering it, there is a transparent screen that fits.

Which one depends on the glass, the light and whether it is for a few days or for years.
