Journey's | Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2024

Creative Technology is honoured to have been entrusted by Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo (REMT) and the BBC to support the technical delivery of the breath-taking projection mapping across Edinburgh Castle throughout each of the spectacular shows over the 3-week period. 

This year’s theme, “Journeys,” required an innovative visual experience that would captivate audiences, whilst still honouring the traditions set by REMT over the years. Leveraging our team’s extensive experience in large-scale projection mapping, we collaborated closely with REMT to transform Edinburgh Castle into a storytelling canvas.  

Utilising over 23 Panasonic RQ35K Laser Projectors, which are widely known in the industry for their unmatched resolution and quality, the team at Creative Technology crafted and collectively delivered an astounding 690,000 lumens, creating an intricate 6K canvas across the walls of Edinburgh Castle. 

The content, designed by Kate Dawkins Studio, featured detailed designs and narratives that required precise technical execution to truly shine. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure the content was displayed to its full effect across the complex surface of the castle. 

Given the scale and complexity of the castle’s surface area, the alignment process needed to be seamless. We integrated long throw lenses with a state-of-the-art 12-camera auto projector alignment system powered by VYV’s Photon software.  

This advanced technology not only aligned the projectors with pin-point accuracy, but also allowed us to continuously monitor and adjust the alignment throughout each performance. Even in the challenging high ambient light conditions, the system proved to be the perfect solution, providing visuals that were consistently sharp and on point. 

The automated alignment capability also significantly reduced the setup time, enabling us to focus on fine-tuning other elements of the production, rather than making a range of technical adjustments.
