Celebrating 150 Years of IRFU | The RDS, Dublin

Attended by 1,600 guests, the IRFU celebrated its 150th anniversary with a prestigious Gala Dinner held at the RDS Hall 1, which featured interviews, speeches, and performances by Phil Coulter and Imelda May.

Working closely alongside our client, THP, we meticulously planned every aspect of the evenings Audio and Visual production to deliver a world-class experience.

Visuals

For centre stage, our team provided a strong LED backdrop, crafted using our ROE Visual BP2V2 screen tiles. Known as the ‘Gold Standard’ in the industry, the BP2V2 screen tiles provided a cinematic quality background for the interviews, speeches, and performances, with rich colour accuracy and on-camera quality.

Two large projection screens were placed on each side of the stage, with two of our High-Resolution Panasonic projectors to ensure the event content was accessible to every table, alongside a number of TV monitors, which were placed throughout the venue to provide extra coverage.

Audio System Design

The audio system was a key part of the evening, and was bespoke designed to ensure consistent, high-quality sound coverage throughout the venue, using advanced line-array technology and sophisticated control systems. Each component was chosen to optimise clarity, depth, and coverage for a large and diverse audience.

Main PA

The main PA consisted of d&b Audiotechnik Y Series line-array, powered by D20 amplifiers using Array Processing. This setup ensured even sound distribution across the entire audience area, preventing “dead zones” or overly loud sections. A number of SL Subs were placed under the stage, powered by D80 amplifiers. These provided deep, impactful bass tones that enhanced the musical performances without overwhelming the audience.

T10 lip-fills, Q7 in-fills, and T10 clusters, powered by D12 amplifiers were placed around the venue to deliver precise audio to areas not fully covered by the main PA, ensuring every attendee experienced balanced sound.

Delays

Featuring d&b Y Series line-array and a center cluster d&b Y-Subs on D12 amplifiers, this delayed system extended clear audio to the back of the room without echoing or overlapping sound. Additional clusters of d&b T10 speakers on stands were positioned down the sides of the room ensuring these areas received the same high-quality sound as the central audience.

The entire system was bespoke designed using d&b Array Calc, allowing precise planning of speaker placement and output for optimal sound coverage. The  system was also time-aligned and EQ’d with SIA Smaart by a dedicated system engineer, ensuring every frequency was balanced and synchronised for the best listening experience.

Front of House (FOH)

Our chosen mixing Consoles DiGiCo Quantum 338 for band performances, offering advanced processing power, ensuring the music was mixed with clarity, and the DiGiCo SD9 for presenters, playback, and interviews. Its intuitive design enabled quick adjustments, ensuring seamless transitions between speeches, interviews, and recorded content.

Monitoring System

Providing clear, reliable sound to performers was crucial for a polished performance. The DiGiCo Quantum 225 was chosen for stage monitoring, enabling precise adjustments to meet the needs of each performer.

Wedge Foldback consisted of Nexo P15 speakers powered by Nexo 4×2 amplifiers. These provided performers with clear audio feedback, ensuring they stayed in sync. 6 channels of Sennheiser 2000 and 4 channels of Shure PSM1000 were utilised for In-ear monitoring, giving performers personal, interference-free sound feeds, reducing stage noise and improving performance quality.

Stage and RF Infrastructure

A robust stage and RF system was deployed to handle the diverse requirements of multiple performances and smooth transitions between acts.

All infrastructure was provided using our new 64-channel XTA Active Split rack and patchable VDC Veam stage boxes on rolling risers. This setup enabled quick backstage line-checks and smooth transitions for musical acts, minimising downtime between performances.

RF Inputs consisted of 12 channels of Shure Axient (handhelds and DPA headworn microphones) for clear, reliable sound during speeches and performances. 4 channels of Sennheiser G4 for the brass band, ensuring their unique sound was captured without interference.

Comms

To coordinate the event seamlessly, a combination of wired and wireless communication systems were used. The Riedel Performer provided secure, reliable communication for key team members, whilst the Riedel Bolero allowed mobility and flexibility for production staff, ensuring efficient coordination throughout the venue.
