The National Library of Ireland’s new tiered lecture theatre is a state-of-the-art facility which was designed with a strong focus on accessibility. The theatre can accommodate 96 people, including two accessible spaces. The front row of seats can be removed to accommodate additional wheelchair users.

The key challenge was to design and install an AV system that was innovative and technologically advanced, but operated with a user-friendly interface, requiring minimal training. This was crucial since many of NLI’s events are hosted by staff members who do not have experience in operating AV systems. The solution required needed to integrate all AV controls through a single interface. 

Our solution included a Fine Pitch LED display, an array loudspeaker system with precise audio coverage, a hearing loop for amplification and accessibility, a range of industry standard microphones and an accessible touch panel controller. The provided system allows any user to control all aspects of the system, from presentations and displays to speakers and microphones. The system also allows users to live stream/participate in a Zoom or Teams type calls. 

The additional support and maintenance contract we have provided has ensured ongoing reliability and troubleshooting assistance for NLI and has enhanced their ability to host engaging events effectively and with ease. 

Our team took an innovative approach to this project, by delivering a highly integrated and user-friendly audio-visual system, bespoke designed to overcome the challenges of operating a sophisticated setup without professional training. The solution involved the installation of cutting-edge technologies, including the Absen iCon C1338 LED screen, Tannoy VLS 15 speakers, and Data video PTC-150TL PTZ cameras, which together provide an advanced yet accessible platform for NLI’s range of events. 

The main innovative solution delivered was the Absen 138″ All-in-One LED Display, a fine-pitch LED screen that offers exceptional colour and contrast, and has allowed NLI to enhance their visual presentations without the need to adjust the rooms lighting. The modular design of the display ensures easy installation and maintenance. 

The integration of the Extron IPCP Pro 360 control processor with an Apple iPad Pro created a full control system that simplifies the operation of the new AV system and lighting. This setup allowed presenters to manage the system using a familiar, tablet-based interface, significantly reducing the level of training required for staff to operate the equipment. This was crucial for the library, as many of their events are hosted by staff members who do not have experience in operating AV systems. 

The Datavideo iCast 10NDI streaming switcher was another innovative solution we provided, which has enabled NLI to easily live stream and record their events. This all-in-one solution allows for seamless transitions between different video sources, enhancing the quality and accessibility of events that combine in-person and remote participation through Teams/Zoom. 

By offering flexible scenarios for event management, the system allowed for both single-person operation and more complex setups involving separate operators. This versatility ensured that the library could effectively support a wide range of events, from simple presentations to large, formal gatherings, while also providing room for future technological enhancements. 

One of the biggest impacts this project has made is the increase in the number of events that NLI can now accommodate and the overall accessibility of the theatre. The simplicity of the system makes the turnaround time of the space much more efficient allowing the NLI to maximise the use of the space.  

The design also supports easy low-cost maintenance that reduces down time, increases efficiency and leads to a more usable space that enhances the overall experience of staff and visitors alike. 

With the new live streaming and recording capabilities, the events can now reach a much broader audience, allowing people who previously couldn’t attend to get involved, creating a higher engagement level with the public and key stakeholders. The recording function allows the NLI to capture content for distribution across all the various social media platforms and will also contribute to a useful archive of important presenters and speakers. 

The installation of the Absen iCon display and Tannoy speakers has highly improved the quality of presentations, ensuring seamless visuals and clear audio coverage. The addition of a hearing loop and amplification created another new level of accessibility for all in-person attendees, aligning with NLI’s commitment to inclusivity.
