Engineering the Soundscape: From F1 Roars to Concert Crescendos

What audio system was used at the Qatar F1 Grand Prix?

On the audio front, we orchestrated a sophisticated dual deployment that addressed both the high-octane demands of Formula 1 and the dynamic requirements of world-class concert performances. For the circuit’s temporary grandstands, we implemented a precisely calibrated system of 103 d&b loudspeakers, strategically positioned to maximize coverage while maintaining clean sightlines for spectators. The audio setup for the F1 circuit’s temporary grandstands was carefully designed with spectator sightlines and a small footprint in mind, while ensuring uncompromised sonic coverage. A total of 103 d&b loudspeakers were deployed, tailored to the specific needs of the space. For long-throw, Y10P point sources were used to effectively reach the back rows of the grandstands. Short-throw areas were managed by E6 and T10 speakers, delivering balanced sound to closer sections. Low-end support came from V-SUB subwoofers placed under the grandstands, providing impactful bass to complement the system. The system was integrated through a large Dante dual-redundant network, originating in the MCR and distributed seamlessly to all locations. This setup ensured reliable and smooth audio distribution across the venue. The result was a clean and efficient audio solution that met the unique challenges of the event, providing an engaging and enjoyable experience for the spectators.

On the other hand, the concert venue presented a different challenge altogether, which we met with d&b audiotechnik’s flagship SL-Series system for the stadium concerts weekend. Myriam Fares took the stage on Thursday, while Maroon 5 delivered a full-house performance on Sunday, bringing the weekend to a powerful close. The system deployment featured an ArrayProcessed 16-deep GSL8 array for left and right mains, supported by an AP 12-deep KSL array for out-fills. Delays were covered with 10-deep XSL arrays, while a ground sub-array of 32 SL-SUBs provided formidable low-end reinforcement. Lip-fill duties were handled by 8 AL90 cabinets, ensuring complete and seamless coverage across the venue. At the heart of the control & I/O system were DiGiCo’s Quantum 3 consoles, covering both FOH and MON. DirectOut’s Prodigy.MP took care of matrixing, redundancies, and format conversions, seamlessly integrating the tour’s guest Quantum 5 console into the system & clocking everything together efficiently. On stage, d&b’s M2, M4, and M6 wedges provided high-end monitoring, while Shure Axient Digital managed radio mics with rock-solid reliability. In-ear monitoring was covered by the PSM1000 system. Reflecting on the event, Wissam Shaheen shared, “I can’t even count the number of times we’ve designed and deployed an SL-Series system, and every single time, hearing the first system check tune is completely mesmerizing, as if it’s the first time I’m hearing it… GSL is an absolute titan.” This robust and sublime setup left both house acts and A-list guests thrilled, showcasing the expertise and attention to detail that went into delivering world-class performances.

Circuit Communications: Orchestrating the Digital Pulse of F1

Our communications infrastructure at Qatar’s F1 circuit represented a masterclass in integrated digital display and signal distribution. At the heart of our deployment was a sophisticated network of LED screens, featuring the cutting-edge Roe BQ4 and Infiled 4.6 displays strategically mounted throughout the circuit. The permanent structure integration posed unique challenges, but we engineered custom rigging solutions that ensured both stability and optimal viewing angles for spectators.

One of our standout achievements was the Main Control Room (MCR), which served as the nerve center for the entire operation. From here, we managed the distribution of F1’s Track TV programming across 16 LED screens via a comprehensive fiber network. The system’s sophistication was evident in its ability to seamlessly integrate with the circuit’s existing infrastructure while maintaining the flexibility to broadcast zone-specific safety messages and announcements. Our equipment arsenal included top-tier technology from industry leaders like Barco, Ross, Aja, Blackmagic, and Multidyne, all working in concert to ensure uninterrupted content delivery.

A particular point of pride was our innovative approach to the entrance experience, where we installed striking 10-meter by 2.5-meter rectangular LED prisms. These towers, powered by Novastar processing and Infiled 4.6 LED technology, featured dynamic brightness adjustment capabilities that responded to changing ambient light conditions. This attention to detail exemplified our commitment to enhancing the spectator experience, from the moment they entered the circuit until the checkered flag fell.

“The success of this complex operation hinged on the seamless collaboration of three specialized teams working from the MCR, each bringing unique expertise to ensure every aspect of our digital communication system performed flawlessly throughout the four-day event. Through meticulous planning and real-time monitoring, we maintained zero downtime while meeting F1’s exacting broadcast standards,” explained our head of Integrated Network and Comms, Darius Charlerly.

LED Screens and Video Systems: Enhancing Spectator Experience

On the video front, Creative Technology (CT) provided 300 sqm of LED screens using Infiled ER5 panels and ROE Vanish 8, powered by Brompton processors. The screen management was handled with a Barco E2 for control and synchronization. The event was captured using a 9-camera setup, including Panasonic UC4000 and UE150 cameras, operated through the Ultix Ross Carbonite switcher. The media server used for visual playback and integration was a Disguise GX3. For the circuit, CT delivered comprehensive LED and broadcast solutions. The setup included 9 LED screens using ROE BQ4 panels with Megapixel processing and Infiled 4.6 panels with Novastar, totaling 500 sqm of LED screens. Additionally, 3 LED totems were deployed, adding another 270 sqm of LED screens to the system. CT was also responsible for the broadcast distribution, successfully delivering feeds to over 80 endpoints across the circuit. This ensured seamless and reliable coverage for all LED displays and broadcast requirements throughout the venue.

What technologies were used for lighting during the F1 event?

Our lighting operations at the Qatar F1 2024 encompassed two distinct yet equally challenging environments: the technical precision required for the race circuit and the artistic flair demanded by the concert performances. At the circuit, we transformed the Pit Building into a broadcast-ready environment with an impressive array of 350 Cameo Zenit W600 fixtures, complemented by 80 Elation KL PAR FC IP units and 88 Astera Titan Tubes. The installation’s crowning achievement was the trio of 9.5-meter LED totems at the main entrance, each equipped with 24 Elation Proteus Excalibur fixtures that painted the night sky with dramatic beams, creating an unforgettable first impression for arriving spectators.

When asked about how lighting can truly transform a space and elevate an experience,”The F1 weekend presented us with a unique creative canvas – from illuminating the precision of motorsport to amplifying the energy of world-class performances. Our approach was to create distinct yet complementary lighting environments that would serve both broadcast requirements and live spectacle. The real achievement was in the seamless transition between these two worlds, where technical excellence met artistic expression,” said Sam Connolly, Head of Lighting at Creative Technology.

For the concert series, we crafted unique lighting environments for each performer. Myriam Fares’ show on Friday night sparkled under a sophisticated rig featuring Elation Proteus Excalibur and Ayrton fixtures, while Sunday’s Maroon 5 performance required an expanded setup with over 200 fixtures, including the precision of Robe iForte LTX Followspots for intimate audience connection. The versatility of our lighting design was particularly evident in our deployment of Elation Pulse Panel FX units, which offered stunning RGBW performance with a flexible zoom range, enabling us to create dynamic visual textures that enhanced each artist’s unique performance style.
