The Norwegian Opera & Ballet, the interesting building adorning Oslo’s cityscape, is impressing enough from the outside. With its white, modern surfaces and large windows, the building lies in all its glory, almost like an iceberg, right down by the fjord in the Oslo city centre. Since its opening I 2008, the Opera House has been a popular destination for tourists and Oslo residents alike, who can be seen walking around and on top of the roof of the building. But it’s inside the Opera House the real magic happens.

We stopped by!

Late last year, we traveled down to meet Nicolai Nishino-Ekberg, head of the department for light, sound and image at The Norwegian Opera & Ballet. Here we were lucky enough to get a tour of the part of the building that isn’t visible to the public – we got to see everything from the massive stage machinery that starts far below the Oslo Fjord, to the trusses that hang all the way up under the roof of the main stage. There are a lot of stairs to climb, as you can imagine, but it’s absolutely worth it.

“We are proud and happy to have DNO&B (The Norwegian Opera & Ballet) as one of our biggest customers for many years. Norway’s largest music and performing arts institution is exciting to follow as they are often the first to come up with ground-braking technology, an inspiration for the rest of the industry, as well as other opera houses in Europe.

Through several tenders, we have supplied both our own manufactured products (Xline), moving lights from Martin Professional (Mac Ultra and Mac Encore), lighting console by MA Lighting and our stage platforms from Nivtec. Most recently, we delivered Klemanti’s horizon lamps from ADB to the main stage.” Says David Børke, from CTs sales department.

Creative Technology has won several tenders over the years, all the way back to when the Norwegian Opera & Ballet was based at Folketeateret, which has led to a good and important collaboration that we are both proud and happy to have. One the main stage, you can see, among others, our self-produced Xbaby fresnels in use as hall lights, as well as moving lamps from Martin Professional. You can also find a selection of Robert Juliat profiles, which, despite being over 15 years old, are still in use, which we delivered through Elpag as early as the opening in 2008. The latest contribution from Creative Technology is new horizon lighting which you can find on the main stage as well, first put to use in the classic The Nutcracker during Christmastime last year.

“Through many years, CT has distinguished themselves as a valuable supplier for the Opera House, with an impressive and wide selection of quality products, knowledgeable employees and attractive prices. They have consistently provided good customer support and follow-up even after a sale has been completed.” says Nicolai Nishino-Ekberg, head of light, sound and image at The Norwegian Opera & Ballet.

It’s always inspiring to see our products in use, and a little extra grand when they are a part of such a massive and impressive institution as The Norwegian Opera & Ballet. Many thanks to Nicolai, René and Sandra for showing us around!
